EU to finish plans to reopen countries as summer tourism season begins

BRUSSELS, Belgium: The EU is preparing to reopen its borders to tourism following their sealing their borders as part of the Covid lockdown.

"The Commission proposes to allow entry to the EU for nonessential reasons not only for all persons coming from countries with a good epidemiological situation, but also all people who have received the last recommended dose of an EU-authorized vaccine," the EU said in a statement.

Travel to the EU's 27 member countries is largely limited to those few countries with low infection rates. Officials now hope to open borders and stimulate the summer tourist season.
EU officials are moving forward in opening the continent based upon optimistic projections of larger numbers of people receiving the Covid vaccination.

The EU's proposal would see travelers being allowed into European countries if they have been vaccinated with serums approved for use in the region. Member states would also be able to approve for entry those who have received vaccines listed by the World Health Organization for emergency use.

In the event there is a resurgence of Covid infections in Europe, officials have proposed to introduce an "emergency brake" to prevent virus variants from entering the bloc. "This will allow member states to act quickly and temporarily limit to a strict minimum all travel from affected countries for the time needed to put in place appropriate sanitary measures," it said.
